Pot Marigold

Calendula officinalis
L.
Asteraceae (Compositae)
Daisy family

The shining orange-yellow capitula of the Pot Marigold are blooming throughout the whole summer. The precise origin of this annual or short-lived perennial, which is often used in nature cure, is unknown, but thought to be in the Mediterranean region. A closer look into a fruiting capitulum is rewarding: The eponymous dry indehiscent fruits (cypselas) developing in the ray florets, are partly winged, falcate or ring-like. They deviate clearly in their construction and dispersal type in either attaching to animals or being transported by wind or ants. Calendula extracts have mainly an anti-inflammatory effect.
